PUTRAJAYA – After a recent spate of bullying in schools, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today it was important to develop people’s morals besides physical infrastructure.
Speaking to artists at a break fast function, he reminded them to be role models to Malaysians in order to prevent cases of extreme bullying from happening again in the country.
“In the past few days, the issues of gangsterism and bullying have grabbed everyone’s attention. I hope that all of you can play your respective roles to instil humanitarian values in the community.
“We don’t just want to develop big buildings, high speed rails and highways, but we also want to develop a civilisation of high morals,” Najib said during his speech today.
The Pekan MP also said that groups like actors, artists, intellectuals and broadcasters play an important role in being “role models” for the public.
“All those who here are not just contributors (to the industry), but also help complete the community. They are opinion leaders as well as role models to the people,” Najib said.
Several bullying cases, including Penang teenager T. Nhaveen and Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia navy cadet Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain who were both allegedly assaulted and killed by bullies, have recently hogged headlines.
Many groups, including those from civil society, have called for harsher laws and for more education on bullying to be made by the government in order to prevent such cases in future.
