SAD TO SAY THE MORE ANWAR CLINGS ON, THE MORE HE LOSES THE RESPECT OF M’SIANS: DAUGHTER IZZAH INSISTS ANWAR AS PM IS NOT ‘FAR-FETCHED’ beritamalay3.blogspot.com
PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar says it is not impossible or unpragmatic to nominate her father, jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, as prime minister.
She said the nature of Anwar’s “unjust” imprisonment could excuse him from the mandatory five-year ban from politics for those who have been convicted.
“I think Rafizi Ramli has addressed this issue. There are many ways to skin a cat,” Nurul Izzah said.
Nurul Izzah was referring to Rafizi’s essay on May 24, which outlined how PKR had successfully proved naysayers wrong many times since its inception in 1998 and continues to thrive as a multi-racial party with elected lawmakers in every state in the country.
Critics have been proven wrong repeatedly, said Rafizi, because of PKR’s reformist agenda which meant that they were always ahead of the curve and that the party’s seemingly impossible plan to install Anwar as prime minister will be the next milestone.
Some of these critics exist within the Pakatan Harapan coalition itself, with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) supreme council member Rais Hussin claiming that it was illogical to pin hopes on Anwar being the prime minister because of the latter was legally barred from taking office.
Nurul Izzah for PM?
Rais believed that the obvious choice for Harapan was Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who led BN to victory during five elections from 1981 to 1999.
She stood firm on previous decisions made by her party to have Anwar as prime minister.
“In 1999, that was the decision we made before he was unjustly imprisoned.
“After the 2013 election, when he led all of us as opposition leader to win 52 percent of the popular vote, it was also our decision (to have Anwar as PM),” she said at Kampung Kerinchi in Lembah Pantai today.
On a recent suggestion that PKR Wanita leaders such as herself and Zuraida Kamaruddin being considered as “PM material”, Nurul Izzah chose not to weigh in on the matter.
“I don’t think that should be our focus. We have key candidates that are being discussed internally within the Harapan leadership council (on June 9),” she said.
She said that Harapan’s nominee for premiership must be a reformist-minded and credible person, regardless of whether the nominee’s gender.
