PETALING JAYA – Malaysia has climbed one spot in this year’s edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI), making it the 29th most peaceful country in the world.

It is fifth in the Asia Pacific region, coming after New Zealand, Japan, Australia and Singapore.

Indonesia, at No. 52, registered the greatest score deterioration in the region, according to the report.

This plunge was driven by a deterioration in the indicators measuring political terror and the number and duration of internal conflicts.
The Philippines’ overall score has also deteriorated since president Rodrigo Duterte took office in June 2016, placing it at 138th place out of 163 countries measured in the report.

Europe remains the most peaceful region, followed by North America and Asia Pacific.

The report found that while the world became more peaceful in the past year, it has become significantly less peaceful over the last decade.

The 2017 GPI states that Iceland has maintained its position as the most peaceful country in the world.

It has been ranked as the world’s most peaceful country every year since 2008.

Syria remains the world’s least peaceful country for the second successive year, having fallen 64 places in the rankings since the inception of the index.

It has also had the largest fall in score of any country in the last decade.

Produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace, the GPI covers 99.7% of the world’s population, using 23 indicators across three key domains – Societal Safety and Security, Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict, and Militarisation.
